#1300 • 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar — Mint: Philadelphia

Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)

High bid $60.00

Status: Available

An 1879 Morgan silver dollar. The date reads clearly at the bottom of the obverse, just below the bust. LIBERTY is spelled out across the headband. E PLURIBUS UNUM runs around the top and sides. The edge is reeded. The portrait looks to be the classic Morgan obverse: a left-facing Liberty head in a cap with what appears to be wheat and cotton, with stars along the lower border. The coin has what appears to be gray-brown toning, darker near the rim and stars. It shows honest circulation. The high points, including the hair above the ear and the cheek, appear worn. What appear to be fine scratches or hairlines show on the cheek, neck and the field in front of the face. A nineteenth-century Morgan for the album, the coin tray or the collector who wants one with some years on it. Opening bids are low, so this one is up to the room.
