#1606 • Barber Nickels: (8) Liberty Head 'V' Nickels, Carded, Holders Dated 1904-1907
Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)
High bid $25.00
Status: Available
Eight Liberty Head 'V' nickels, each carded in its own white cardboard 2x2-style holder with a round window, stapled shut. The listing title calls them Barber nickels, a collector nickname that appears to come from the coin's designer, Charles E. Barber. Left-facing Liberty in a coronet, ring of stars, date below. A classic American design, eight times over. The holders are hand-labeled in blue ink by a prior owner. The holder dates are one 1904, two 1905, two 1906 and three 1907, so this is a grouping with duplicates rather than a single-date run. On the top row, the 1906 date reads plainly on the first coin and 1907 reads plainly on the third and fourth, each matching its holder. The second top-row coin, written as 1906-P, shows a date that appears to be 19x6. Several holders add a '-P', which looks to be the writer's notation; general knowledge holds that nickels of these years were struck at Philadelphia and carry no mintmark. Six of the eight holders carry a handwritten 'G' grade note from the previous owner. This is personal notation, not third-party certification. Two holders also carry handwritten mintage notes: '38,613,725 Mintage' on the 1906 and '39,214,800 Mintage' on the 1907. The coins appear to show heavy wear, with flattened hair and coronet detail, and several show what appears to be uneven gray to brownish toning. Honest circulated pieces with a century-plus of pockets behind them. Includes: (8) Carded Coins All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Preview in person before bidding.
