#1702 • Coin Lot: Holders Hand-Labeled Michael & Ivan IV Kopek, Byzantine 1/2 Follis
Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)
High bid $45.00
Status: Available
Two Russian rulers and a Byzantine half follis, by the handwriting on their holders. One yellow cardboard holder is hand-labeled 'MICHAEL 1613-1645' and 'KOPEK'. Another reads 'IVAN IV GRAND DUKE 1533-47' and 'KOPEK'. Those dates appear to match the reigns as generally recorded: Michael Fyodorovich, Tsar 1613-1645, and Ivan IV, Grand Prince of Moscow from 1533 until he was crowned tsar in 1547. The Michael coin appears to be a small, irregular oval, silver-gray in color and shaped like a Russian 'wire' kopek. Its face looks to show a mounted rider holding a spear, with letter-like marks at the lower left. The back of one of the yellow holders shows an oval coin with what appears to be several lines of Cyrillic-style lettering. The Ivan IV coin looks to be small, irregular and silver-gray. The tan holder is hand-labeled as a Byzantine coin, with 'Abt. 580 A.D.' in red ink and '1/2 FOLLIS' at lower left. Its coin appears round, dark and larger than the kopeks. Pictured with the group: two small dark brown coins in a clear plastic square holder, and a loose coin that appears copper-brown and irregular, with some raised letter-like marks. Small, old, hand-labeled and a little mysterious. Exactly the kind of group a collector likes to sort out at the kitchen table. All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied.
