#1703 • Ancient Coins Group – Worn Coins With Dotted Pellet Borders
Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)
High bid $40.00
Status: Available
Greek letters on a coin that has been through some things. The bottom-left coin in the main photo carries a legend that appears to read ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ over ΑΝΤΙΟ…, beside a standing figure. Read in full, that phrase is Greek for 'of King Antiochus'. The coin beside it shows a lower row of letters that also appears to begin ΑΝΤΙΟ…, and another coin shows Greek letters across the top above what may be an animal. Six coins are pictured together, laid out loose. They are heavily worn and encrusted, and much of the design and lettering is no longer legible. Several show a border of raised dots, a pellet border, around the rim. Several also show what appear to be worn portrait heads, one a profile with hair or wreath detail. The metal looks to be reddish-brown, with dark brown to black deposits or patina settled into the recesses and around the rims. The flans appear thick, small and round to slightly irregular, with what look to be angled edges on two of the coins, and a small notch or split appears at the rim of some. Listed as ancient coins and sold as a group, this is a hands-on lot for the collector who enjoys a magnifier and a long evening of reading worn legends. All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Preview in person before bidding.
