#1712 • Indian Rupee Banknotes: Reserve Bank of India 10 & 50 Rupee Notes

Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)

High bid $10.00

Status: Available

Mahatma Gandhi looks out from the right side of these Reserve Bank of India notes, his name printed beneath the portrait and the Ashoka lion capital emblem at lower left. The lead photo shows seven paper notes: six 10-rupee notes and one 50-rupee note, the fifty reading 'THE SUM OF FIFTY RUPEES' and 'पचास रुपये', the tens 'दस रुपये' and 'I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER THE SUM OF TEN RUPEES'. One of the tens breaks the pattern. No portrait, a big orange '10' at center, green at the right and the lion capital emblem standing in for Gandhi. The Gandhi notes look to be from what is generally called the Mahatma Gandhi series, with the lion-capital ten appearing to come from an earlier series. Signatures above 'GOVERNOR' appear to read Bimal Jalan on one ten, Reddy on another, and what appears to be C Rangarajan on the lion-capital note. These notes were used. Folds, creases, soiling and edge wear throughout. The top-left ten has its upper right corner folded over and separated along the fold, and the bottom-left ten carries handwritten ink marks in its left blank area. The lion-capital ten appears to have a ragged right edge, and the fifty shows what look to be worn, rounded corners. Honest pocket money with travel miles on it, a good start or add-on for a world paper money collection. All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied.
