#1506 • (2) Series 1957 A $1 Silver Certificates, Blue Seal, Dillon Signature
Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)
High bid $10.00
Status: Available
Two one-dollar Silver Certificates, both Series 1957 A, both with the blue Treasury seal and blue serial [removed]. Paper money that once promised a bearer silver on demand, and says so right on its face: 'IN SILVER PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND.' Each note carries George Washington's portrait, the line 'THIS CERTIFICATE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS PUBLIC AND PRIVATE,' and the printed signature of C. Douglas Dillon as Secretary of the Treasury, paired with what appears to be the signature of Elizabeth Rudel Smith as Treasurer. Flip them over and you get 'IN GOD WE TRUST' above 'ONE,' with the Great Seal pyramid at left and the eagle at right. The two notes carry different serial [removed], not a consecutive pair. These notes did their jobs. The upper note shows honest circulation: multiple folds and creases, including through the portrait, toned and soiled paper, irregular edges with small nicks, and softened corners. The lower note also looks to be circulated, with folds, creases and soft paper, but appears cleaner, with straighter edges and lighter paper than its partner. A solid pair for a type set, a gift for a young collector, or a starting point for anyone curious about the days when a dollar was tied to silver. All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Preview in person before bidding.
