Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)
High bid $5.00
Status: Available
Four coins from the war years, one lot. Three Lincoln wheat cents and one Jefferson nickel, each in its own white 2x2 holder, all four hand-labeled "1943S." The lot is listed as three 1943-S steel war pennies and one 1943-S silver war nickel. Start with the cent in holder 1. It's labeled "STEEL," and the coin shows a clean, legible 1943 date with LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST plain to see. There's what appears to be a mint mark below the date. The surface looks to be dark gray with mottled spotting or toning. The cents in holders 2 and 3 appear bright silver-gray, lighter than the first. All three appear gray or silver rather than copper. 1943 Lincoln cents are generally known to have been struck in zinc-coated steel, the one year Lincoln went gray. The nickel is a Jefferson, portrait on the front, Monticello on the back, in a holder hand-labeled "1943S SILVER 5¢." Its surface appears gray-brown with toning and what looks to be wear on the high points. Each holder also carries a handwritten grade notation (VF, XF, AU and VG, left to right). Those are handwritten notes, not professional grades. A tidy little wartime set for a starter collection or a Lincoln album that needs filling. All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied. Preview in person before bidding.
