#1644 • 1868 Shield Nickel & Buffalo Nickel – Two-Coin Lot

Part of October Multi-Estate Auction (timed auction by Bid Fast and Last)

High bid $15.00

Status: Available

Two classic American nickels, one lot. Leading off is an 1868 Shield nickel. The obverse carries the shield design with a wreath and a cross above, with IN GOD WE TRUST partly legible along the edge. The reverse shows a large 5 inside a ring of 13 stars, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around it and CENTS below. That reverse looks to be the no-rays type of the 1867-1883 Shield nickels, which agrees with the date. It wears its years openly: the coin appears to show heavy wear, dark spots and scratches on the obverse, with darker toning on the reverse. Riding along is a Buffalo nickel. An Indian head faces right on the obverse, with LIBERTY partly legible at the upper right. Turn it over and the bison stands left, framed by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and FIVE CENTS. The reverse appears to be the Type 2 design, with FIVE CENTS in a recessed area below a flat ground line rather than on a raised mound. This one has also done its time in pockets: it appears heavily worn, with multiple fine scratches across the obverse. A Civil War-era Shield and an Indian head Buffalo in the same lot. Two of the most recognizable designs in US five-cent coinage, and a good start or a good addition for a type collection. All lots sell as-is, where-is, with no warranty expressed or implied.
